In our previous post on the various youth and women trainings that CEHDEER offers; we identified the different empowerment programs CEHDEER embarks upon to further enhance human development in society. But in this post, we’ll be sharing with you how CEHDEER trains youngsters.

First of all, before an empowerment program is organized and carried out, we usually put into consideration the importance of such training and how it will empower our trainees.

How CEHDEER Finds The Right Program

There are different empowerment programs that are suitable for youngsters. However, each program varies in its capacity to add value to the lives of the trainees. Why? Based on terrain, economic conditions in such terrain, available resources, and consumers who make up the source of income by patronizing the new trades learned by our trainees after their training.

To put it in simpler terms, I mean the market in every society is considered, before choosing the right programs to organize. A simple example of this can be found in a typical Nigerian village. Training the youths in such an environment to repair phones may not be as productive as soup making or honey production. Because most of the population in these villages may not have the resources to use smart phones.

CEHDEER considers the market in a society and then engages in the most productive empowerment program for its trainees. This is done by simply engaging human relations—talking to young and old people alike. Finding out areas of interest to the people, with likely avenues of advancing human development.

After these considerations have been made, and a program to enlist trainees have been decided; we inform those interested in this empowerment program for registration and enrollment.

How CEHDEER Enrolls Trainees For Empowerment Programs

After choosing  a program that is important to the economic growth and development of individuals in the community or society, getting those concerned or interested to apply or register becomes easy.

Usually, we use posters, handbills, broadcast media, and social media to spread the news about our empowerment programs. This is to ensure that the word gets around. Mostly for youths, we reach them through posters, handbills, and social media.

Contained in our posters or broadcast mediums is the information necessary for everyone applying or interested in our programs to apply. Information such as the venue of the training, materials to come with, email address, and phone numbers to reach us with their registration details. Once the information required is sent, we can then make proper arrangements for their training, based on the number of applicants.

At other times, CEHDEER may be invited to train individuals in organizations or companies. An example is a Church inviting CEHDEER to train her youths on computer repairs or fishery. In such cases, we find out who we are training and what training they require so we can adequately make arrangements for the program.

How Does CEHDEER Carry Out Her Training?

1. Current Training Process

Currently, CEHDEER carries out most of her training in form of seminars or workshops. In training where we educate applicants, we engage the use of seminars. An example of such training is teaching youngsters about saving money and simple ways to invest their money wisely. These seminars may last for over 3 hours per day. And depending on the subject of the training, it may last for more than one day on a stretch.

On the other hand, when it involves training on entrepreneurial skills we use the workshop method to train youngsters. Because this learning process involves practice, we use larger halls for a spacious environment for each trainee to learn what program we have available.

It is important to note that in all CEHDEER’s empowerment programs, we employ the services of experts. We consult with experts on whichever field we are interested to train youngsters on. Then, based on their experience in such a field and ability to train others we employ their services for our programs.

What CEHDEER has in mind is to improve human development. With the sole purpose of empowering people with skills, they can engage and be able to make a living. This is why we employ the services of experts in whichever fields we decide to empower people on.

From our observation, it is most likely that out of 10 entrepreneurially skilled individuals, only 2 may be professional or have mastered such skill. This is one major reason CEHDEER emphasizes using skilled trainers or experts in our programs.

2. Nearest Future Training Process

Often, our workshop training may last for a day, or at most a week because of the current level of resources available to us. However, we are looking at building our training centers in the nearest future at different field offices across the nation. We currently are building one at Ekwoma in Delta State. Our main office is in Benin, and for now, we still make do of rented halls for our empowerment programs here.

With well-equipped training centers, we can run empowerment programs for as long as 3 to 6 months or even a year. Learning an entrepreneur skill for this long helps the trainees to perfect their skills in the area of their choice. You can easily earn from any skill you can create value from. These projects require more resources to be available. And we hope to carry them out as the resources needed are available.

Finally, CEHDEER also empowers youngsters after their training. But this is only done based on the capacity we have now. We allow trainees to share amongst themselves material resources that are left after their training. Also, we offer high-level financial advice to our trainees on how to get loans from financial institutions. As we recognize that it takes capital to start-up most entrepreneurial skills we train on.

In the nearest future, we are working on partnering with some financial institutions to make this process easier for those involved with our empowerment programs.
