There are many things you can do to help empower women. Women need to be empowered because the huge gap between men and women in gender equality is still far from being reached.

In the African society women still experience hardship in some areas such as maternal mortality, sexual assault, depression, displacement of life and property, inequality in job opportunities, and so on.

Every member of the society can contribute enormously to empower women around them. This can be done one way or another, only if they have the right information on how to.

Empowering women doesn’t just begin and end at creating physical structures or providing physical materials to equip women. It also includes training women to be emotionally strong, confident, and bold to pursue higher education, so that they can dare to take up leadership roles in the society.

Below are 10 Ways to Empower Women

1. Create Social Centers Where Women Can Be Empowered With Knowledge

Knowledge is power. Creating social centers where women can be trained is vital. These social centers serve as safe spaces where women in a community can always meet to talk about issues such as gender equality, health and women rights.

There are many areas women can be trained on, such as learning about health issues to reduce maternal mortality rates and how to medically take care of themselves and their children.

Health is just one aspect, women can also be empowered with skills such as tailoring, book keeping, hair making, soap making, and many other skills to create small businesses to help their families.

A social center also creates a platform where women can meet to share their challenges with each other. Those who are more experienced can then help the younger women proffer reasonable solutions to help them out with challenging situations.

The ability to read is very important in this 21st century especially for uneducated women. Little things like the description on a medicine bottle, road signs, phone numbers, etc. These are very important information, needed to get along in our day to day activities.

Teaching them to read simple and basic things, such as the above can be done in social centers. A large group of women can be taught in this regard.

Educated women can volunteer to teach others or interest groups that empower women can make arrangements to teach them periodically.

4. Donate to Empower Women Empowerment Centers.

We are just one of the many other women empowerment organizations in the Nigeria. One way to reach out to women who are displaced due to crisis, poor and less privileged is to donate to organizations as CEHDEER that help reach out to these women in various parts of the Nigeria.

Your Donation can go a long way to help provide food, shelter, clothing materials, clean water, etc, to cater for the needs of women and their families.

5. Educating the Girl Child

Women empowerment

Every girl child today will eventually become a woman tomorrow. The only way to ensure that she is able to live and sustain herself and her family in the future is to educate her today.

Education creates the opportunity to for any girl child to make a difference in their society in the future.

6. Lead and Raise other women

If those who have gone ahead will reach out to help other women become better, empowering women will be much easier.

Older and more established women should volunteer to help other younger women become better. This can be achieved through mentoring them in areas they may be lacking experience or expertise.

Through leadership by example, and mentoring other women, it creates room to sponsor those who need help to stand on their own.

7. Support Businesses Owned by Women.

Simply by investing as little as you can, you can help grow the business of any woman close to you or where ever you go.

Apart from patronizing their businesses financially, you can also support women by supporting what they do. Buying books written by women, recommending their business to others, share their programs with other women, and so on. If you have a friend who sings, you could share her songs with others.

And the list goes on. Whatever means possible, do well to appreciate women by encouraging them in their business.

8. Celebrate & Compliment Women

Beyond her physical or natural beauty, celebrate her inner beauty. Women are emotional creatures. Celebrate her mind and soul, not just her beauty.

Sincere words that compliment a woman go a long way to help her do even more of the same. A woman feels great to hear she’s beautiful but also want to hear she is brilliant, strong, kind and helpful.

For all the efforts they put together to make things work, I think a sincere compliment aimed at encouraging women isn’t too much to ask for.

9. Provide Clean Water

Among other basic amenities, water is very essential in the life of women. A good way to empower women in any community is to provide access to clean water.

Women and children, most often in rural communities travel long distances to fetch water to cater for the needs of their families. Most of which are not clean.

You can empower women by supporting and donating to organizations that build borehole systems in communities to provide women and children access to clean water.

10. Give Women Leadership roles and more job opportunities

More women are becoming empowered and are high contributors to the economy. Despite their roles in development and growth, they are still marginally not involved in decision making and lack the influence to empower other women.

With more women given leadership responsibilities, we can have more women join the league of decision makers.

Their influence in the decision making process will go a long way to help create more opportunities for gender equality and women empowerment.

So, make it a point of duty. Set out what you’d like to contribute to empower women where you are. I end with the words of Brian Tracy, “if you want to change your future, take action and take action NOW.”
